Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in Massachusetts

Charles River Recovery offers Day Treatment (PHP) as a structured daytime level of care between residential and less intensive outpatient support. We provide intensive care with support to return home or to sober living at night.
Our partial hospitalization program provides structured, full-day treatment for people seeking addiction treatment while returning home or to sober living at night.

What PHP Looks Like At Charles River Recovery

Our PHP runs on weekdays with a full daytime schedule. Each day combines individual counseling, group therapy, and evidence-based treatment sessions. At the end of the day, you return home or to sober living.

A typical day includes clinical group sessions using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, wellness activities, and, when appropriate, medication management.

PHP at Charles River Recovery typically lasts 4 to 12 weeks, depending on individual needs and progress. Your treatment team continuously assesses your progress and adjusts your plan accordingly.

Who is PHP Designed For?

PHP bridges the gap between residential treatment and standard outpatient care. It’s the right fit if you’ve completed detox or our residential (CSS) program and need a structured step-down before returning to daily life. It also works for people who need more intensive support than weekly outpatient therapy provides, or who are managing co-occurring mental health conditions alongside substance use disorder.

You may transition directly from our on-campus detox or Clinical Stabilization Services (Residential/CSS). Others enter PHP as their first level of care when full residential treatment isn’t necessary or feasible.

Evidence-Based Treatment In Every Session At Charles River Recovery

Our clinical team draws from CBT and DBT-informed approaches, along with individual and group therapy, to support recovery.

Family therapy is part of the program for clients who want it. Family involvement can be a crucial source of support in recovery.

We also integrate wellness activities into the weekly schedule. The program supports a more holistic recovery approach with coping skills and wellness support.
