Intensive Outpatient Program for Wayland Residents

Most people who call us about evening treatment have already tried to manage on their own. They’re working, or looking after a family, or both. They know something needs to change. What they need is a structured programme that doesn’t require putting their life on hold.

Our Evening IOP runs three evenings a week at our Weston campus, near Wayland, with access via Route 20. We provide structured group therapy, individual support, medication management when clinically appropriate, and care led by an experienced clinical and medical team.

Why evening IOP may be the right level of care

Evening IOP can provide a structured level of care between weekly therapy and residential treatment. It gives clients structured clinical support without requiring them to step away from work, family, or home life.

Our evening IOP runs outside standard business hours, with clients attending three evenings each week. Between sessions, they return home and continue their daily responsibilities. The work is focused and clinical, including group therapy, individual sessions, relapse prevention, and psychiatric support when needed.

Before anyone starts, we complete an assessment to determine whether evening IOP is the right fit. Admissions include an initial consultation and assessment before a treatment plan is recommended. We review treatment history, current needs, and whether IOP, PHP, detox, or another level of care makes the most clinical sense.

How Charles River Recovery structures the Evening IOP program

We run our Evening IOP three evenings per week to support clients who are balancing treatment with work, school, or family commitments. Each session uses evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These are structured clinical interventions, not general support groups.

Our programme includes:

  • Group therapy focused on substance use patterns, coping skills, and relapse prevention
  • Individual therapy with an assigned clinician
  • Family therapy, when clinically appropriate
  • Medication management and psychiatric review when indicated
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorders when appropriate
  • Education on substance use, coping skills, and relapse prevention
  • Peer support and connection within the treatment group

For clients stepping down from our PHP or medical detox program, evening IOP can provide continuity of care on the same campus.

Who leads the clinical work?

Our clinical work is led by Jillian Martin, Director of Clinical Services. She is an LMHC, LADC I, EMDR-trained clinician with more than 15 years in behavioral healthcare.

Medical oversight comes from Dr. Salah Alrakawi, our Medical Director, who is dual board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine and is listed as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

For clients with both substance use and mental health concerns, we treat both within the same program through our dual diagnosis approach.

Why Wayland residents consider Evening IOP

Evening IOP may fit Wayland residents who need structured treatment around work, family, or daily responsibilities. Some people reach out after a physician raises a concern. Others contact us after a family member raises a concern. Some call after a specific event makes the need for support clearer.

Some clients considering Evening IOP are still keeping up with daily responsibilities. They may still be managing daily life. Evening IOP offers structured support before concerns become harder to manage. The Evening IOP is designed for people who need structured care while continuing daily responsibilities.

Questions Wayland residents ask us

Do I need to have completed detox before starting Evening IOP?

Not necessarily. Some clients may start with IOP when the assessment supports that level of care. Others step down from our medical detox or PHP program into IOP as part of a planned treatment sequence. Our clinical assessment at intake determines the appropriate starting point. If medical detox is clinically indicated before IOP, we will tell you that clearly and discuss detox at our Weston facility or another appropriate option.

The program runs three evenings per week. Duration is individualized based on clinical progress, clinical needs, and your treatment goals. Most clients engage with IOP for several weeks. Your treatment team reviews progress regularly and adjusts the plan as needed.

Yes. Our program addresses substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions within the same treatment plan. Co-occurring mental health needs are addressed within the same treatment plan when clinically appropriate. The clinical team includes addiction medicine, licensed counseling, and EMDR-trained clinical leadership.

Discharge planning is part of the clinical process from early in treatment. Aftercare planning may include step-down support, outpatient referrals, medication-management planning when applicable, and connection to the Alumni Program. The Alumni Program includes weekly group sessions, peer support, regular community events, and sobriety milestone recognition. Recovery does not end at discharge from IOP.

Family therapy is included in the program when clinically appropriate. Involvement depends on clinical appropriateness and the client’s treatment plan.
